Differences between Traditional Ceramics & Advanced Ceramics

In general, ceramic materials used for engineering applications can be divided into two groups: “Traditional Ceramics, and Advanced Ceramics”. Typically, Traditional Ceramics are made from three basic components: clay, silica and feldspar(i.e. bricks, tiles and porcelains.

However, Advanced Ceramics are made from high purity inorganic compounds which have been synthesized by artificial synthesis and under strict controlled by molding, sintering and other treatments resulting in a series of excellent physical, chemical and biological properties. Application range is far beyond that of traditional ceramics. Materials consist of highly pure compounds of Zirconia Oxide (ZrO2), Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3), Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Silicon Nitride (Si3N4). So the mainly four material properties and value differences :

  • Different Raw Materials.
  • Different Materials Structures.
  • Different Manufacturing Processes.
  • Different Applications and Economic Values.
