Advanced Technical Ceramics
Ceramic materials play a decisive role in high- temperature applications with continuous operating temperatures ranging from 180 °C to well over 1200 °C. Due to these extreme temperatures, it is impossible to use plastic materials. Many materials are present as molten mass or even steam and when temperatures rise, metals lose their strength. This is a clear distinction between ceramic materials and metallic materials.
Advanced Technical Ceramic is a well-known significant commercial application. Traditional ceramics such as clays, bricks and tiles are usually hard, porous and brittle. The term advanced technical ceramics refers to ceramic material that have been specially designed to improve those characteristics and overcome the issues arising from traditional ceramic’s mechanical properties. These materials included Zirconia (ZrO2), Alumina (Al2O3), Silicon Carbide (SiC), Alumina Nitride (AlN) and other materials.
Advanced technical ceramics parts are used in harsh environments in which resistance to wear and corrosion and high mechanical performance are of primary importance. Zirconia-based materials are the best solution for these types of applications due to their excellent bending strength and toughness, superior hardness and resistance to corrosive environments.
